3 Question Thursday – Amy Carter

My special guest this week is super-savvy business owner, Amy Carter. Amy amazes me by not only being a wonderful mom, active church volunteer and all-around great lady, but she also runs TWO businesses from home. Two very successful businesses at that.

One of her businesses  is all about chocolate – Dove Chocolate to be specific. The other is a dear little paper called The Country Register. Amy was kind enough to share details about both businesses with me. In Amy’s own words, let’s get to know her a little bit better:

“I have a Dove Chocolate Discoveries business. It’s the same Dove Chocolate that you know from the candy bars and Dove Chocolate Promises used in products such as: – chocolate BBQ sauce  – chocolate martini mix – chocolate salsa – chocolate covered cinnamon dusted almonds – molten lava cakes  & more! I help hosts gather friends for a fun time sampling some of the Dove goodies. You gather the friends and I bring the chocolate! Ladies night outs, a chocolate martini happy hour, a fundraising party, wine and chocolate pairing, or even a couples party –your choice. I have a team of over 70 chocolatiers in 13 states that I support too. I started my Dove business about 6 years ago.

The Country Register is my second business – it’s a bimonthly statewide guide to unique shopping and events. Copies are found at the shops that advertise, welcome centers and other targeted distribution sites plus the current issue can be read on our website. We publish 5 state wide editions: MD, VA, NY, FL and PA/WV. Our small staff does everything from selling ads, designing the ads and laying out the publication. Articles feature projects, articles on advertising shops, recipes and feel good topics – no news. Our advertisers include shops such as quilting, needlework, antique, gift, primitive and garden shops. David and I started our first Country Register about 14 years ago.”

Amy, what’s your favorite part of being a business owner?

My favorite part of being a business owner is being able to help others. Whether that’s helping others enjoy the fun of gathering friends to enjoy chocolate goodies, find a perfect gift for a chocolate lover or helping someone start their own Dove Chocolate Discoveries business to support them to reach their goals. With my publishing business, I have the joy of helping small business owners reach new customers. I also enjoy the flexibility of both businesses while also working them around my family’s needs.

Share something that not many people know about you.

Most people probably don’t know that I am hard of hearing. I’ve had a significant hearing loss in my right ear for over 20 years. I do wear a hearing aid in that ear however it can’t compensate for my hearing loss. So if you ever thought I was ignoring you – I wasn’t – I just didn’t hear you. I’ve learned over time to do pretty well at reading lips too. Noisy environments such as networking events and even chocolate parties are a challenge for me.

Share about your family now – a husband? Any kids?

My husband, David, and I will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary this August. He’s a commercial airline pilot. Our girls are nine and 13. Both girls are year round swimmers. We enjoy traveling quite frequently as a family! We recently returned from a trip to Iceland and have also taken our daughters to Paris twice.

What a perfect combination…a writing publication and a chocolate business. Who could ask for more. Your article completely reinforces the idea that you really can take your passion and turn into a living. Looking forward to next week’s spotlight.

…And Amyyyy…I wish you could send some chocolate samples through the computer!! : )
